art from down south

I plan on in the near future to take a trip down through Mississippi and do some painting.   I've always thought my best work just lie there waiting for me to find and paint.  It's been years since I've done any paintings there and was at the time just starting.  It is truly Americana.... the feed stores, sawmills and train tracks grace all the little towns.  I can't wait to get back there,   I think there is enough material there to last me from now on and never paint anywhere else.

H.R. Lovell Art on Facebook

You can now follow us on face book on the H.R. Lovell Art page.  Its basically the art and some of the stories about each painting and some of the people involved and how the painting came about.  A lot like the website but maybe more detailed in the description and stories behind them.  Also some input on some of the people who have collected my art over the years.  It's been fun reliving some of the stories and thoughts about some of the paintings.

New 9 color giclees'

Our giclees' are now printed on a 9 color printer instead of the original 7 color format.  This gives for closer to original color than ever before.  I'm really excited about the color and quality of the new process.  We also offer giclee' printed on canvas now.  If there's any questions about this process, feel free to email athrlart@aol.comor message on the comment section of the website.  They are not listed on the site itself, but anything that is on the website is available on canvas now.

South Over Charlotte

While driving down River Road right past the Allen house Friday.....I saw my first flock of geese this year flying south.  It so reminded me of the flock of geese flying over the gallery in Charlotte one fall afternoon while we were sitting on the porch.  I was so struck by it, I went in and grabbed my sketchpad and sketched it out.  Later turned it in to what I think is one of my better traditional watercolors, "South Over Charlotte" .  Its funny when you see something that reminds you of one of your paintings.....you seem to remember the time....the music you were listening to....and everything about what inspired you that day to do a painting.  Its like you were there all over again.  Sometimes I just scroll through my paintings and just reminisce about the times and memories each painting brings back.  When you spend weeks, months or even a year on them, they become a part of your life..  Friday afternoon, I was back in Charlotte on the porch watching my next painting.....at that time....fly over the gallery.

Its been awhile

It's been awhile since I've picked a paint brush up....two years to be exact.  I have finally started on a portrait for a friend.  I thought this might be a good warm up to get me back in the groove. Luckily, I don't seem to have lost any rhythm or skill levels..The only thing that really bothers me is that I don't seem to have the drive or motivation that I've had for 35 years as I thought I would.  Maybe it's just the layoff and I need time to get myself back into it.

H.R. Lovell

Just picked my pencils up and did a preliminary sketch for the first time in over a year.  It feels good...now comes the big test......can I still paint?  hope so, because I need to get this portrait painted.  And then I'll be back doing new original paintings....hopefully the best work is still in front of me, I think so....time will tell

Back to Kentucky

Its been awhile since I've painted anything... fourteen months to be exact.  Next week I'm going up near Scottsville Kentucky and check on Janice and Rose, the little menonite girls I've painted...they will be breaking ground and getting the crops out.  I'm thinking of doing a series of paintings around the countryside...maybe starting in the spring and going through the months showing all the different seasons and the work that goes on during those months from molasses making to milling flour....and of course some of the people involved.   Just a thought.   It is so refreshing there its hard to leave and not capture something on canvas.  Any thoughts?

This is the newMaria Cherry Gallerylocated in Scottsdale, Arizona!  We haven't been on the site much (blogging) because we have been in transition moving all the artwork to the new gallery in Scottsdale from Charlotte, tn.   Including my work, we will also be representing two other amazing artist...Barbara Allen who specializes in wildlife art and landscapes.   William Walls who does landscapes and historical scenes.

New works

I've been working for the last two months on some comissioned pieces so I've put some of my other projects on hold but will soon be working on them and posting progress reports.   One of the commissioned pieces is an old house built in and around the 1850's ....really a neat place and one of my better watercolors....I will be posting it on the site in the next couple of days along with more early sketches and some more scrapbook material.
